During the Fourth Review Conference (RevCon4) of the UN Programme of Action (PoA) on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), GICHD co-organised a side event titled « Knowing where you are is the first step to getting there: Knowledge-generating tools and information-sharing mechanisms to enhance PoA implementation » 24 June. It was organised with the support of the European Union and in collaboration with the Organization of American States (OAS) and INTERPOL. The aim of the side event was to present 3 initiatives implemented by the 3 organisations with EU support:
- The Regional Communication Mechanism on Illicit Transfers of Firearms and Ammunition (MCTA) and CIFTA Revised Questionnaire to assess state capacities by OAS
- The Arms and Ammunition Management Validation System (AAMVS) by GICHD/AMAT
- INTERPOL Global Communication System 24/7 (I-24/7) by INTERPOL
During the side event, the EU delivered their opening remarks highlighting the importance of these initiatives for the prevention of diversion of SALW. This was followed by presentation on each initiative and a final Q&A session. Over 30 participants attended the side event representing various states and organisations.
